At UpDesk we talk a lot about how sitting at a regular desk or office chair can drastically harm your health and put you at risk for a host of chronic issues - but you know we're upbeat about it. Although prolonged sitting may be the new smoking and we're going to be honest about that we also know that you can't always have it your way when it comes to your workspace at the office. Here are a few things you can do to sit less at work even if you don't have a standing desk or are still saving up for yours.

1. Set an Alarm

Most of the time we lose track of time at work - especially when we're sitting. Our eyes glaze over looking at spreadsheets and we slump deeper and deeper into our desk chair. Try setting an alarm to remind you to get up stretch and move around at least once an hour. Engaging your muscles - even for 5 minutes - can actually make a big difference.

2. Have a Walking Meeting

We've talked about this before - walk and talk meetings can be a great way to keep your body moving even during a long day at work. Not only does it get your body moving it gets your mind moving as well helping you to think outside the box and brainstorm ideas you might never think of while sitting.

3. Take a Lunch Break

Don't eat lunch at your desk. Lunch breaks are there for a reason - not only do they help you re-energize for the second half of your day they help you shake off the weariness of sitting all day and get your body moving. Walk to your favorite restaurant (even if it's ¼ mile away) or just take your lunch outside and have a picnic. Anything is better than sadly staring at your computer screen while you eat your sandwich.

4. Drink Lots of Water

Sure you may be running to the bathroom more often but staying hydrated at work (and in life) is HUGE. It keeps you focused and productive...and if you refill your water bottle at a fountain across the office you'll get that much more time in motion.

5. Have a Standing Meeting

You may not have a stand up desk but you can still have a standing meeting. Do you have a bar-height table in your break room? Use that. Or just stay standing while you meet in your regular conference room. Studies show that standing during meetings actually improves group brainstorming and collaboration. How's that for a win-win?

Now that you know a few tricks for sitting less during your work day you'll be well on your way to a healthy life even before you get your height adjustable desk. But when you are ready to get to standing give UpDesk a call. Our UpWrite Midnight is a great standing desk for all your neon brainstorm sessions and the SquaredUp corner desk will look great in your new corner office after you get promoted for being so awesome.
