I'll be the first to admit: staying healthy is hard. Even though I work at UpDesk where an active lifestyle is encouraged there are some days (or weeks even) when sitting on the couch with a bag of Cheetos in one hand and the remote control in the other sounds a whole lot better than doing anything active. Standing at your stand up desk going for a run heading to the gym--those can all be a whole lot tougher than putting another bag of popcorn in the microwave. But after weeks of living like a sloth you'll notice negative effects on your body. Sitting in your desk chair for long periods of time can make your pants fill just a little bit tighter and it's not because you just pulled them out of the dryer. You might even start to feel sick causing you to miss days of work causing you to get passed over for that promotion you have been working so hard for.

I get it. I've been there. Even though anyone rarely regrets working out or being active the motivation to actually stand up and get going can seem very very far away...or nonexistent. Those are the times you need to remind yourself why health and wellness is important and why you shouldn't be slumped at your computer desk for 60 hours a week.

Here are several quotes that will inspire you to keep your body healthy whether you're working at a treadmill desk or stand up desk or waking up at 5am for a 5-mile run.

  • "To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear." - Buddha

  • "A healthy body is a guest-chamber for the soul; a sick body is a prison." - Francis Bacon

  • "To ensure good health: eat lightly breathe deeply live moderately cultivate cheerfulness and maintain an interest in life." - William Londen

  • "A bear however hard he tries grows tubby without exercise." - A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh

  • "Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity." John F. Kennedy

  • "Everything is hard before it is easy." - Goethe

  • "Take care of your body. It's the only place you have to live." - Jim Rohn

  • "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going." - Jim Ryan

And just for kicks a quote from Richard Simmons: "Number one like yourself. Number two you have to eat healthy. And number three you've got to squeeze your buns. That's my formula."

Do any of these quotes resonate with you? Okay maybe Simmons' quote is a little ... out there. If you find a few quotes you like put them on your desk tape them to your bathroom mirror or stack them next to your bed. It's the first step to healthy living.
