One more piece of bad news for all those chronic desk-sitters out there: studies show that too much sitting makes us feel depressed.

According to findings published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (and in Daily News) as your time spent sitting in that office chair increases so does your likelihood of developing symptoms of depression.

Two universities in Australia brought together four years of surveys from almost 9000 women that measured their level of regular physical activity alongside their level of depressive symptoms. The results were surprising.

(Note that while this study focused primarily on women it's a safe bet that the findings apply to men as well perhaps just with different statistics.)

First of all women who sat for more than seven hours a day were 47% more at risk for developing symptoms of depression than women who sat for four hours or less every day. You don't even have to stand all day. Just shave three hours off your time spent in that office chair and add an almost 50% better chance of staying happy.

And exercise comes into play here as well. The report stated that women who didn't exercise had a 99% higher chance of being depressed as compared to women who exercised 30 minutes on most days. Did you catch that? You have almost a full 100% guarantee of depression if you don't exercise. Yikes!

These results may be shocking to some...but they aren't a surprise when you compare them with all the other negative effects sitting has on your body. Not only does sitting weaken your creative energy and productivity it wreaks havoc on virtually every part of your body.
