Standing up at a standing desk has many benefits--many of which we've covered before. Energy focus productivity and better posture are just a few of the positive rewards linked to using a stand up desk.
Now a new study from researchers at Washington University in St. Louis shows that standing up perks employees up during meetings makes them more excited during collaborations and even opens them up to their colleagues' ideas. Because employees are standing they haven't claimed territorial space around the table causing them to open up more willingly to others' ideas.
Standing is inactive whereas sitting in an office chair ... Well it can put you to sleep. Picture this: a long droning meeting in a warm room and you and your colleagues are sitting around a conference table. That sounds like just the remedy for a quick catnap doesn't it?
"Standing up gets your body going" said Andrew Knight co-author of the study. And if your body is ready to go your mind will follow. While standing even when you shift your legs Knight explained that it caused "greater physiological arousal" which is key when getting through a meeting or long work day.
He concluded "It's about unlocking people from the shackles of their chairs and making them feel free to stand during meetings."
